US Cargo Bike Revolution

I came across this post on Facebook and was totally inspired to see what was happeing in the states. A country that has as bigger car culture as Australia however there is a grass roots movement away from this non sustainable mode of transport to a cargo bikes. Cargo bikes offer the ability to carry stuff (lots of stuff, inc children) with very low running costs, no pollution, no parking fees and all the freedom you receive from cycling. its starting to take off here in Australia with people looking for alternatives to the car!

Liz Canning is making a film on the imminent American Cargo Bike Revolution, documenting this cultural phenomenon as it unfolds over the next few years, assisted by internet activism and the advent of e-assist; forced to fruition by Peak Oil and Climate Change. We are focusing first on what's happening in the San Francisco Bay Area (often referred to as the Great Bike Hope for the US—excepting Por...tland, of course, a city ahead of its time bike-wise). This will become a short piece of its own for use in fundraising—a preview of sorts.

So far we've tracked down about 20 families who are ready and waiting to be interviewed, plus Ross Evans of Xtracycle fame, Ben & Steve at Yuba, Spokey the local e-assist guru at Bicycleworks, and Bay Area framebuilder Cameron Falconer who’s designing his first cargo bike. There are also 2-3 families still shopping for their bike, and we're hoping to shoot their transformation into joyful Kid-Carrying Bike families. We will also hear from the Marin, San Francisco, and East Bay Bicycle Coalitions and Safe Routes to School.

This local chapter will culminate in a community event: The Marin Cargo Bike Jubilee, a new part of Marin's famous Biketoberfest!

We are collaborating with local shops, vendors, the MCBC and Safe Routes to School, and other Kid-Carrying Bike families to create an educational celebration of the High Occupancy Velo!

Next we’ll shoot a profile on the Portland scene, and beyond, until we can tell the national story and answer the question: Could bikes someday regain their status of 200 years ago, as an essential and efficient means of human transport?

I will direct and Amanda Fin (MFA, Stamford) will produce. I studied film at Brown University and have worked over 15 years as a professional editor/animator. You can see my work at www.lizcanning.com.

We invite you to get involved and send us your ideas, suggestions, contacts, encouragement!
