Some simple ways that you can start making a difference at home, at work, at school, in your community and around the world. Simple Ways to Reduce Carbon Emissions • Ride a bike (or an electric bike), walk, car pool or use public transport instead of driving. Use biodiesel or an ethanol blend in your car. • Use Green Power, about a third of Australian carbon emissions come from electricity use. • Buy a solar hot water system and/or a 1 kw PV solar system. The government rebates make these excellent investments with a good payback period. • Replace normal light bulbs with their energy efficient counter parts. Halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lights can all be replaced, saving greenhouse gas emissions and money on your electricity bills • Switch off computers, TV’s and any other electronic equipment when not in use. A TV set that’s used for 3 hours a day and in standby mode for the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode. • Buy paper, wooden furniture and wooden products that has been sustainably forested. Deforestation accounts for about 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions. • Refuse junk mail and when possible, get bills and bank statements sent electronically. • Use a compost bin, buy organic, eat less meat, support farmers markets and buy unprocessed and unrefined food. • Buy ethically made and recyclable products. Say no to plastic bags and over packaged items. • Support local environmentally aware businesses, where you spend your money is a powerful tool. • Conserve your air conditioning and heating use. • Educate your friends on what they can do to help stop global warming. |
